The TBBP has ongoing, rotating internship
positions available at the Pacific Coast Science and Learning
Center. Our mission is to
provide students the opportunity to apply their scientific
and technical knowledge to rigorous investigation and documentation
of biodiversity.
The TBBP currently has four types of internships.
Geographic Information Systems
The objective of this internship
is to help build and maintain our collection of spatial
information on Tomales Bay and its ecosystems. The intern
solicits digital information from other agencies and
organizations, reviews data for accuracy, and incorporates
information into our digital atlas of Tomales Bay. Qualifications
for this internship include: proficiency with ESRI’s
ArcGIS, familiarity with Microsoft Access and relational
database structure, and an exceptional sense of information
architecture.
Biodiversity Inventory Research Assistants
Occasionally, researchers focused on the TBBI project require a research assistant in the field and/or the laboratory. The objective of this internship is for a student to gain practical experience and exposure to a marine science career while working closely with a researcher. Applicants must be either a high school junior/senior or in a college science program. Modest stipends are provided, as well as transportation costs where applicable.
Web Management / Graphics and Writing
The TBBP is committed to disseminating information on the ecological
communities of Tomales Bay. This internship maintains the
TBBP website, develops graphical and multimedia tools
to display data, and composes text for a variety of publications.
Qualifications for this internship include: proficiency
with Macromedia Dreamweaver and/or ability to write html
code; knowledge of ASP programming; proficiency with
Adobe Photoshop and Acrobat; and a good sense of information
architecture.
Literature Research
The objective of this internship
is to help gather and synthesize information on the ecological
communities of Tomales Bay. The intern provides support
in the collection, assembly, and integration of data derived
from varied sources. These include scientific journal articles,
databases, and maps. Qualifications for this internship
include: comprehension of terminology used in scientific
publications (especially taxonomy and ecology terms); and
familiarity with Microsoft Access and relational database
structure.
Qualifications
for all internships include superior academic achievement,
coherent writing skills, and analytic thinking skills.
The intern should be able to accept direction, work reliably
and independently, communicate clearly, and ask for help when
appropriate. Additional desirable qualities
include familiarity with query building in Microsoft Access,
familiarity with macros and reports in Microsoft Access and
proficiency in Macromedia Dreamweaver and/or HTML coding.
Internship compensation ranges
from $10-$15/ hour. All positions are part time.
