BioQuests are field outings in which students assist scientists
assessing biological communities. In the past few years, the
TBBP has hosted several algae and intertidal invertebrate
BioQuests and an ascidian BioQuest. The pragmatic goal of
these field outings is to identify a large number of organisms
in a short period of time. BioQuest studies are designed in
a manner to rapidly accumulate biodiversity information and
contribute to our goal of mapping biodiversity hotspots in
the Bay.
The
outings tend to last from 2-5 days and focus research on distinct
taxonomic groups of organisms. Generally, 10-20 students assist
2-7 scientists in the collection of data. In the process,
scientists broaden our knowledge of organism presence and
distribution in Tomales Bay. Students gain hands-on experience
in scientific methods. Everyone involved gains a greater connection
to the life of the bay and insight into ecological processes.
The TBBP hosts annual BioQuests. Upcoming
BioQuests will research benthic invertebrates, diatoms and
phytoplankton. Generally, future quests will target taxonomic
groups with less historic study. If you would like to get
involved with a BioQuest or other research and educational
effort, please contact either Christie_Anastasia@nps.gov
