The Tomales Bay Biodiversity Partnership is an organization of community members and scientists dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of life in Tomales Bay and its watershed. Cooperation for research and management of the bay has been established between over 40 organizations and individuals. Our partnership includes land owners, public agencies, advocacy groups and educational institutions. For a complete list of partners, click here.

Strategies

Inventory - The Tomales Bay Biodiversity Inventory is the partnership’s community-based research, education and public policy initiative to study and map the biological communities in Tomales Bay, California. The results will help ensure a sustainable Tomales Bay ecosystem by providing guidance for:

  • Mitigating threats to the bay - pollution, habitat loss, invasive species, human disturbance, and habitat fragmentation.
  • Restoring deteriorated habitats.
  • Creating stewards of biodiversity.
  • Improving public policy by providing information needed to make science-based management decisions.

Working Together - A primary strength of this project is integration of science and community involvement. This integration supports the capacity of stakeholders to address and reverse threats to the bay. An important partner is The Tomales Bay Watershed Council, a group of environmentalists, ranchers, fisherman and other stakeholders. The Council provides input on data needed and incorporates the TBBP's science into their decision-making processes.

Refining Knowledge - Because of the need to draw large scale conclusions from disparate datasets, another significant feature of the TBBI is the integrated nature of data collection and the unified database structure. Our data will yield products for identifying hotspots of biodiversity, prioritizing conservation areas, and guiding sustainable management of the Tomales Bay ecosystem. Data from our research partners is compiled into a single database, allowing information from many species to be quickly and accurately summarized. Current maps and data are available on this website.
